Abstract
Objective: To examine the plain film of the shoulder as an indication of a rotator cuff tear.

Materials and Methods: 25 patients were examined for the full thickness rotator cuff tear of the shoulder. All patients were diagnosed as the rotator cuff full thickness tear by shoulder arthrography and ultrasonography. Rotator cuff of 14 patients were torn 2 cm or more than 2 cm, the others were torn less than 2 cm. For control, 27 patients with the shoulder adhesive capsulitis were randomly selected. Anteroposterior and axial shoulder radiography were performed in both groups.

Results: There were no significant differences in radiologic findings between the patient and control group. There were no significant differences in radiologic findings between the groups that were torn in smaller size (£¼2 cm) and larger size (¡Ã2 cm). Besides there were no significant differences in radiologic findings between the groups that were torn in smaller size and the control group. However, subcortical sclerosis and greater tuberosity cyst formation and flattening was showed more frequently in the group that were torn in larger size than the control group.

Conclusion: Some radiologic findings in shoulder plain film image were correlated with large size (¡Ã2 cm) full thickness rotator cuff tear.
